Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) is a new type of adsorbent and non-polar carbon material with carbon as the main component and a black cylindrical appearance. It has the ability to selectively adsorb gases based on differences in molecular diffusion rates, making it widely used in gas separation processes.

Working Principle of Carbon Molecular Sieve in Nitrogen Production

  • Selective Adsorption Mechanism: Under compression conditions, carbon molecular sieve can selectively adsorb oxygen and nitrogen. Due to the smaller diameter of oxygen molecules, their diffusion rate is faster than that of nitrogen molecules.
  • PSA Nitrogen Generation Process: When air passes through pressure swing adsorption (PSA) facilities, oxygen molecules are mostly adsorbed by the carbon molecular sieve, leaving mainly nitrogen molecules, thus achieving nitrogen production. This method is known as PSA nitrogen making.

  • High Compression Resistance: It can withstand high pressure during the adsorption and desorption processes, ensuring stable performance.
  • Long Service Life: Has a relatively long lifespan, which helps reduce production costs.

Applications of Carbon Molecular Sieve Adsorbent

  • Industrial Nitrogen Production: Used in PSA generators for nitrogen production in petroleum, chemical, glass, metallurgy, electronics, food, coal and other industries.
  • Gas Separation: It is an ideal adsorbent for removing a small amount of N₂ from C₂H₄-N₂ mixtures.
  • Food Preservation: The application of carbon molecular sieve nitrogen generator in controlled atmosphere storage of apples can control superficial scald.
  • Membrane Preparation: Used in the preparation of carbon molecular sieve membranes, such as nickel-containing carbon molecular sieve membranes (Ni-CMSM).
