Introduction to ZSM-5 Molecular Sieve

ZSM-5 molecular sieve is a high-silica zeolite with a unique crystalline structure, first developed by Mobil Oil Corporation. Its chemical composition can be expressed by the molar ratio of oxides: 0.9±0.2M₂/nO:Al₂O₃:5-100SiO₂:ZH₂O, where M represents cations (e.g., Na⁺, organic amine ions), n is the cation valence, and Z ranges from 0 to 40. It widely recognized for its excellent thermal stability, acid resistance, and shape-selective catalytic properties, making it a crucial material in petrochemical and fine chemical industries.

Structural Characteristics

Crystal Structure and Pore System

  • Basic Unit: Constructed from eight 5-membered rings, forming a framework with no笼状空腔 (cage-free) but intersecting 10-membered ring channels.
  • Orthorhombic System: Belongs to the space group Pnma with lattice constants a=20.1Å, b=19.9Å, c=13.4Å.
  • Dual Pore Channels:
    • Straight channels: Elliptical cross-section (5.7-5.8Å × 5.1-5.2Å).
    • Zigzag lateral channels: Near-circular cross-section (5.4±0.2Å), classifying it as a mesoporous zeolite.

Applications

Petrochemical Industry

  • Catalytic Cracking (FCC): Added as an additive to FCC catalysts to improve gasoline octane number and increase olefin content in gaseous products. Optimal SiO₂/Al₂O₃ ratio ranges from 40-50 .
  • Hydrocracking and Dewaxing: Used in diesel hydrodewaxing catalysts to reduce pour point .
  • Methanol Conversion: Catalyzes methanol-to-gasoline (MTG) and methanol-to-dimethyl ether (DME) reactions.

Fine Chemicals and Environmental Protection

  • Shape-Selective Catalysis: Applied in p-diethylbenzene synthesis, xylene isomerization, and low-carbon hydrocarbon aromatization.
  • Environmental Remediation: High-silica ZSM-5 (SiO₂/Al₂O₃=220-400) is used for extracting organic pollutants from water.

Emerging Applications

  • Olefin Aromatization: Zinc-modified ZSM-5 shows promise in converting FCC gasoline olefins to high-octane aromatics.
  • Ethylene Purification: Potential use in cold-chain logistics for removing ethylene to prevent fruit/vegetable spoilage.
