Activated Alumina for Fluoride Removal: A Technical Introduction

1. Overview

Activated alumina (AA) is a highly porous, solid form of aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) produced by dehydroxylating aluminum hydroxide. It is widely recognized as one of the most effective and economical adsorbents for removing fluoride from drinking water and industrial wastewater. 2. Mechanism of Action

The removal of fluoride by activated alumina is primarily achieved through an adsorption process. As water passes through a bed of activated alumina media, fluoride ions are attracted to and held on the surface of the alumina particles. This process can be described as a specific ion exchange mechanism where hydroxyl groups on the alumina surface are exchanged for fluoride ions in the water. – Drinking Water Treatment: It is the standard technology for community water defluoridation plants, ensuring water meets the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline of 1.5 mg/L. – Household Filters: Small granular activated alumina is commonly used in domestic gravity filters and under-sink cartridges. – Industrial Wastewater: It is used to treat effluents from semiconductor manufacturing, glass etching, and fertilizer production industries where fluoride concentrations can be very high.

Once the activated alumina reaches its saturation point (indicated by fluoride breakthrough in the treated water), it requires regeneration.

A typical regeneration cycle involves: 1. Backwashing: To remove accumulated suspended solids. 2. Desorption: Treating the media with a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution to strip the fluoride ions. 3. Rinsing: Washing away the caustic solution. 4. Reactivation: Treating the media with a mild acid (like sulfuric or acetic acid) to restore the surface chemistry for the next adsorption cycle. 6.
